1620719_650677008311834_1590562545_nIt was a shocking for us to find out that here, in Hawaii, there are gift shops selling preserved baby sharks with the false pretext of bringing good luck under Hawaiian cultural traditions.

The Waikiki shop NANI ALOHA STREET is selling these disturbing pickled dead baby sharks as souvenirs!!!

Hawaiians made shark parts very useful in their daily activities back in the olden days. The skin was used as sand paper to sand canoes and wood. The teeth were used to make weapons. The sharks were respected and honored, they were revered and often feed in heiaus (place of worship) throughout Hawaii and Polynesia.

Baby sharks were NOT kept at home for good luck in Hawaii.

We are proud to be the first in the world to have banned the trade and possession of shark fins but it would be nice to prohibit the distribution of souvenirs like this ones which are detrimental for the health of our oceans.

Take a look at the shark jaws below the baby sharks and read the NONSENSE they have written.

They have bluntly lied about our traditions and used our culture to their advantage by twisting the facts.

This is the shop that’s selling this products, NANI ALOHA STREET. Do not support them by buying any of their products if you visit Waikiki.

If you see shark products please do NOT buy them… if you do your are directly supporting the destruction of this species.

Remember to check the ingredients on your dietary supplements and cosmetics. Often they contain shark cartilage or shark liver oil.

BIG Mahalo to our special agent Philippa Thomas who made us aware of this issue of and who took the pictures for our blog.

Aloha
